Emily and Her Diary - 1994 Edition of 350 Retail Price $795 Emily is every inch the little lady, just as she is expected to be. In Victorian times, a young lady of "breeding" was raised in a very circumspect manner. She was expected to comport herself in a genteel way. Idleness was held to be the "devil's workshop", so it was important for her to be industrious, but only in appropriate pursuits. Playing the piano, singing, and sketching were all thought to be acceptable pastimes. Reading and writing as long as the subjects were light and cultured, were laudable interests. It is to our feminine credit that even within these somewhat confining structures, creativity often blossomed. The Gentle Pursuits Collection celebrates that very spirit, and Emily and Her Diary is the first in this collection. Emily is a 16" doll with delicately sculpted porcelain head and hands on an intricately jointed, poseable wooden body. She wears a hand-embroidered dress of wild silk in a hand-dyed violet hue. She has brown curls and pensive grey eyes. She carries a hand-bound leather diary and a quill pen and inkwell. |
